What is bilirubin?

What is bilirubin?

Bilirubin is a pigment that is converted in the liver of a person by splitting certain proteins. If his indicators are normal, it is not worried about what, but with the deviations of the pigment volume without medical care, do not do. Look below, we consider what the gall pigment is, what are the norms of indicators and what symptoms appear when it increases?

1
What is bilirubin?

When the breakdown of transport proteins containing iron, bilirubin is highlighted. In other words, the liver accumulates "taught their" erythrocytes, which, under the influence of normal physiological processes, disintegrate into components, one of which is bilirubin. If all organs perform their work without hemodynamic deviations, the bilirubin is derived from the body naturally, otherwise it accumulates in the liver and poisoning the cell cells. Bilirubin can be different types:

  • Straight (free) - most often appears due to poor bile outflow.
  • Indirect - appearing as a consequence of decay of red blood cells.

2
Bilirubin rate in blood

There is a norm for the indicators of bilirubin in the blood. Based on the floor and age, it can change. The first trial on bilirubin is taken from newborn children, especially if there is a yellowish skin shade. Such a sample is necessary to start treating if necessary and avoid the consequences of jaundice in newborns. For only the norm that appeared on the world is considered:

  • in the first day to 106 μmol / l;
  • for 3-5 days - 205 μmol / l;
  • after a month, the norms are equal to adults.

The overall rate of bilirubin in the blood is the total value of direct and indirect bilirubin. Adult rates is a general indicator at the level:

  • in men - 8.5-19.8 μmol / l;
  • in women - 3.3-19.0 μmol / l.

3
What does elevated bilirubin in newborns mean?

The newborn is characteristic of the postpartum physiologically jaundice. This is due to the fact that in the womb of the mother, the kid was attended by specific hemoglobin, which after birth actively disintegrates and is replaced by the usual form of hemoglobin. In the process of decay to the blood, a lot of coloring bilirubin pigment is distinguished, which leads to staining of the skin, eyeballs and mucous membranes in yellow. With the normal operation of a small organism, the jaundice starts to disappear for 5 days.
The danger of the manifestation of jaundice exists for premature babies. The problem left without treatment can lead to:

  • physiological deviations;
  • violation of the brain;
  • loss of hearing;
  • liver damage.

4
What does the overall elevated bilirubin in adults: symptoms

If the analysis shows an increased common bilirubin, then this may indicate the following health problems:

  • there are blood diseases;
  • the presence of worms;
  • there are gall-eyed illness;
  • development of cirrhosis.

In addition to the yellow skin shade, the following symptoms indicate the bilirubin increase:

  • children stop in development;
  • headache and tachycardia appears;
  • man is quickly tired;
  • the spleen increases.

If the elevated bilirubin is a consequence of liver problems, then there will be characteristic symptoms:

  • bitterness in the mouth;
  • light chair and dark urine;
  • changing skin color and itching;
  • vomit.

5
Risk of raising bilirubin for the human body

Bilirubin is a toxic element and its elevated presence in the body can be very dangerous, especially for brain cells. In medicine, the presence of "superfluous" bilirubin in the body is called hyperbilius, which is divided into the next degrees of danger:

  1. Minor increase (up to 70 μmol / l). With such indicators, the body works as usual.
  2. A pronounced form (up to 150-170 μmol / l). Danger exists, since bilirubin penetrates into cells of other organs, poisoning them. The state is not critical, but requires medical intervention.
  3. The form is severe when the bilirubine indicators are rapid over 300 μmol / l. This indicates intoxication of the body and requires immediate treatment.
  4. Extremely severe form occurs if there is no appropriate treatment at intoxication. Such a state may result in death.
