Perhaps you could often find files with the extension of MDF or MDS. This is a special type of images that are recorded with CDs, as well as DVD discs. As a rule, the MDS file goes with MDF to create libraries, correctly display the names of the tracklist and sequence. If you delete or just lose the MDS file, then nothing terrible will happen: MDF is still successfully unpacked. But if you delete MDF, then the second file will become simply unnecessary.
What opens MDF
The MDF format can be opened with ordinary programs for unpacking and creating images. As a rule, they choose the most common:
- Daemon Tools;
- Alcohol 120%;
- Ultra ISO;
- Nero.

- Open the Daemon Tools program after downloading;
- Agree with a license agreement;
- Select the installation directory. It is desirable that it is not a local disk;
- Order the location of shortcuts and quick access to the program.
After that, work with MDS and MDF files will be available to you.
How to open a file MDF
When starting work, remember that you should be in an administrative account. Otherwise, the installation of the program and reading MDF can be problematic.
Now you can go to Daemon Tools through the Start panel. Click on the program icon.
As soon as the utility opens, click on the “quick mount” icon. It is located separately from the rest at the very bottom of the window on the left.
Find the files on your computer in the opening window of MDF and MDS. You can separately open the MDF file, then you will not be able to record it for DVD and CD players in the correct sequence. If you open both MDF and MDS, then playing video and tracks will be in a clear sequence according to installations in the MDS file.
If you cannot mount the image, then you may have problems with the drive. Click on the line “Add a drive”.
Now put the right installations:
- In the line, the virtual drive should be the value of “dt”;
- DVD the region can be left on number 1;
- In the “Mount” section, put the letter that will correspond to the virtual drive. You can choose at your discretion.
Click “Add the drive”.
Now you can open MDF files directly from the folder. It is enough to click on the file with the right mouse button and select “Open using”, and then “Daemon Tools Lite”.
