How to break the catalyst

The exhaust system of almost every car is equipped with a catalytic neutralizer (catalyst), which is a part designed to reduce the content of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon, nitrogen oxide and other harmful substances in exhaust gases. Its replacement is envisaged after passing a car of a distance of 100 thousand km. Some car owners prefer a cheaper way - to break through the catalyst.

Instruments:

wrench;
catalyst rings;
WD-40 or White Spirit. and lubrication;
chisel and hammer or drill with a long drill.

Modern catalysts are a complex of several parts (exhaust manifold, flange compounds, catalyst tank), some of which contain precious metals. This explains the high cost of this part of the exhaust system. If the catalyst is clogged, the thrust deteriorates and the fuel consumption increases. The clogged catalyst is not repaired, it needs to be replaced with a new one.

To remove the catalyst, follow these steps:

install the car over the observation pit;
unlock both fastening of the catalytic neutralizer in the exhaust system;
remove the catalyst.

Main job:

soak all bolts and nuts in a special WD-40 fluid that performs the lubrication function, prevents corrosion;
insert the chisel into the catalyst and the hammer beyond it to destroy its insides;
extract all the garbage;
or carry out less radical measures: Drill in several places of the inside of the neutralizer throughout so as not to affect its tank;
install the new gaskets in the connection locations to avoid transmitting;
screw the catalyst to the original location.

There are several consequences of the punching of the catalyst, not all of them are positive:

environmental pollution with harmful gases;
at high speeds, greater noise may appear;
if the car is modern, then there is a danger that the engine does not start, because In new cars after a catalyst, manufacturers install a sensor that analyzes its operation, and in the case of an increased content of harmful gases, the electronic unit receives a command about this, after which the motor will not start.

Before you decide on a similar step, decide on the priorities: saving money or pure ecology. In addition, as an alternative, a plane sensor can be installed.
