What is a galaxy?
What a galaxy represents, people learned not so long ago. It turns out the accumulation of stars, gas and dust near the body with a special attraction (kernel), called the galaxy. There are a large set of such clusters in space space. Between them there are unoccupied (empty) spaces. The galaxies are formed by millions of years by merging smaller clusters of stars. Their sizes are mainly dependent on age. Some galaxies numbered about a billion stars and are considered small, others contain more than a trillion of heavenly luminaries.

The land is located in the Galaxy Milky Way. This is a spiral galaxy, which has about 400 billion stars. In the center of the Galaxy, the Milky Way is located the kernel, from which two sleeves diverge. At night, in the sky, we can observe the scattering of a million stars, but this is only a meager part of our galaxy stretching for 100 thousand light years.
It should be noted that our star system is considered small against the background of the Milky Way existing in the galaxy. And our sun is located in one of the sleeves. Then what is in the center of our galaxy? Scientists recently found themselves that in the middle of the Milky Way there is a black hole.
Nearest neighbor - Galaxy Timber Andromeda
The closest is located to our Galaxy "Neighbor" Nebula Andromeda. Sometimes in a very clear night, it can be observed with a naked eye. This galaxy also has a spiral form, but more like a wheel in which stars of different sizes and ages are located.
About the merger of galaxies
Scientists put forward the opinion that huge galaxies are formed by merging several smaller galaxies. The theory is voiced that the Milky Way was formed by fusion from 10 to 100 galaxies. To date, our closest "Neighborhood" Nebula Andromeda is moving in our direction and in 4-5 billion years old risks connecting with one of the sleeves of the Milky Way, which will be the beginning of the development of a new galactic system.
