How to calculate the brake path

When a newcomer driver sits behind the wheel, after two or three trips, he is convinced of a personal experience: the braking path is not always the same. In some situations, this distance turns out to be vital, so everyone is obliged to be able to calculate the braking path of his car.

From the point of view of the theory, the braking path is a distance that the vehicle overcame from the moment of clicking on the brake pedal until a complete stop. This figure depends on several factors: speed, road coating, brake system worn, type varieties and their status.

To calculate the brake path, the formula S \u003d KE x V x V / (254 x Fc) is used. The designation S is the length of the braking path in meters, the brake coefficient (in the passenger car, this indicator is equal to one), V is the speed at the beginning of the braking (in km / h), the FC is the clutch coefficient with the road. The latter value depends on the weather: for dry asphalt it is 0.7, for wet - 0.4, for the rolled snow - 0.2, and when ice is 0.1.

But when moving the driver is not to formulas, it is interested in specific numbers. And in this case, the average indicators are known in the conditions of the normal road. At a speed of 60 km / h, the length of the brake path will be about 17 meters, at 90 km / h - 50-60 meters, and at a speed of 120 - from 90 meters and more. Please note: if you increase the speed halve, the length of the braking path increases 4 times!

It is important to realize that the length of the braking path is also caused by other factors. The driver, having seen an obstacle, must decide on braking, move the leg to the appropriate pedal, press it. Professional riders will take this from 0.3 seconds, the newbie behind the wheel - from 1.7. In addition, the brake system also triggers not lightning. A passenger car will slow down in 0.1-0.3 seconds, further 0.3-0.5 C will increase the braking force from zero to the maximum value. All this is only moments, but the car moves, an obstacle closer with every second.

To reduce the likelihood of sudden braking, it is enough to adhere to several rules. Really relate speed with road conditions. Keep a sufficient distance from ahead of the car that in the case of a sharp braking you managed to respond. The newer the car, the shorter it can be its braking path. Conversely: Do not rebuild in front of trucks and buses, since their brake system requires more time to stop. Do not distract and, if possible, follow the situation on the road through the windows of the front car. We regularly examine the brakes on the object of the flap of the pads and hoses, repair the malfunction in a timely manner.

Do not forget that squeezing the brake pedal to the limit, you can completely block the wheels, then the car will become unmanaged. Be careful on the road, keep moderate high-speed mode, and you can protect yourself, our passengers and other participants in traffic from traffic accidents.
