How to use a compass - instruction

Without a compass in the wilderness, you can survive, but it is very difficult. In order not to get lost and not lost, the topographic map and a reliable compass is not enough - you need to use them to use them. Learn to navigate the compass maybe everyone can help this article.

1
How to use a compass - compass marks

Each compass has its own type and design, but all of them are designed by the same principle. Each compass has a magnetic arrow indicating the poles of the planet. Let's look at what parts the compass:

  • Plastic transparent plate on which the compass is located.
  • Arrow, which indicates the direction.
  • The transparent ring on which the compass (magnetic needle) is fixed.
  • Rotating arc around the compass.
  • The arrow that rotates inside the compass.
  • Not magnetized arrow, which indicates the direction.
  • Lines of reference.

2
How to use a compass - how to keep

Compass must be put on palm and bring to the chest. This is the correct location of the compass during any travel. If you just need to refer with the card, then put it on a flat surface and put a compass from above. So you can easily navigate the terrain.

3
How to use the compass - definition of the parties

This is a quick and easy way to orientation on the ground. Look at the magnetic arrow. Suppose you go to the north.

  • Rotate the division scale. This is done as long as the magnetic arrow does not fall on the direction arrow. Both arrows must point to the north. After that, determine the direction of your movement. You can do it by looking at the direction of movement.
  • Look, where the division scale intersects with the direction of the movement arrow. Look at the division scale to accurately determine your direction. If the intersection occurs around the digit 20, then you move on 20 degrees to the northeast.

4
How to use the compass - the difference between the magnetic / geographical northern poles

Even taking into account the fact that they are both "northern", the difference you will remember very quickly, as it is very important for the proper use of the compass.

The difference of readings may be insignificant, but the difference in 1 degree will mean deviation from a certain target 100 meters with each kilometer. And what will happen if you need to pass 10 or even 20 kilometers? Consider the difference is simply necessary.

5
How to use a compass - calculate your direction

Moving in open area or in the forest, it is necessary to periodically determine its direction. Remove the compass so that the direction arrow coincides with your direction (where you go). The magnetic arrow coincides only if you are moving to the north.

6
How to use a compass - keep moving

Hold Compass properly. Turn with it so that the magnetic arrow indicates the north on the division panel. Move aside where the direction arrow shows. You can check the compass all the way, just be careful and do not move the division panel.

7
How to use a compass - use landmarks

When you follow the specified direction, where the arrow shows, select a guide (pillar, stone or tree). Do not choose too remote objects (mountain) - they will not allow you to navigate with the necessary accuracy. Reaching one landmark, look at the compass and choose the next one.

8
How to use a compass - transfer the course to the card

Put the map on the horizontal surface and install the compass from above. The line of the direction should indicate north. Now put the compass so that it goes through your position, and the arrow pointed to the north. Swipe along the compass passing through the point of your position on the map. Stick in this direction.

To quickly and correctly navigate at an unfamiliar area, be able to choose the crustane path and know your location, you must regularly exercise with a compass and card, train observation and visual memory. The compass is the most reliable companion of the tourist, provided that they are able to use. In order not to be in a ridiculous situation when you have a compass, and you got lost and do not know where to go, learn our article now, sitting with a cup of tea at a computer.

In the section "How to use the Compass - transfer the course to the card" The author gave the wrong advice, since he did not say that when transferring a magnetic azimuth (compass course) to the map of it absolutely necessary to subtract Western magnetic declination or add east - depending on the availability of or the other. Conversely, when transferring a true course (true azimuth) from a map to a compaton rate (magnetic azimuth), from the true course, the Eastern declination is deducted, and the Western is added, not paying attention to signs that denote these magnetic decline. And then, what is this "division panel"?! This is a scale of degrees ... the compass is not so many details - it would be possible to learn.
