What is a computer memory

Computer memory is a special device for recording and storing various kinds of data. Two types of memory in the computer device are distinguished: operational and constant (internal and external).

1
RAM - a quick type of memory that allows you to record and read data with high speed, but the information is stored in it only in the included state of the computer device, that is, when electricity is supplied to it. It is this nuance that makes the RAM unsuitable for long -term storage of information. Turn off the computer - and all the information from the RAM will be erased.

The purpose of RAM is to record information with high speeds with the installed programs and the operating system. Upon turning on, when turned on, it is just a loading of the programs necessary for operation in RAM. RAM there are several types: SDRAM, DDR, DDR2, DDR3. Each subsequent type of memory is an improvement in the previous one and allows a new memory to work at a greater speed. At the moment, modern computers use RAM type DDR3. The choice of RAM depends on the connectors on the motherboard.

3
A constant memory is a type of memory that allows you to store information when the computer is turned off. The most common option of constant memory is HDD hard drives. They are one or more magnetic discs rotating at a high speed (from 5 to 12 thousand revolutions per minute), and heads designed to read and record information. HDD are reliable information carriers, allow you to record and read the information a huge number of times. Their only minus - they are very susceptible to blows, falls and other mechanical influences, especially at the time of work.

4
SSD solid -state drives are gaining more and more widespread. This type of constant memory has developed from USB flash drives. The main advantages and disadvantages of SSD drives:

  • have many times a higher reading and recording speed than HDD;
  • are not susceptible to mechanical influences;
  • the cost of the SSD drive exceeds the HDD fee by several times;
  • they have a final number of reading-records.

5
CDs and DVDs also relate to the constant memory of the computer, being a relatively inexpensive option for storing small volumes of information. The danger of loss of information on these media consists in their mechanical damage: scratches, faults, thermal effects.

Each type of memory of a computer device has its advantages and disadvantages, but there are some without which the computer will not work. CDs and DVDs, USB-flash drive, removable hard drive are optional components in the system unit, and without RAM and local hard drive, the device will not function.
