How to read tire sizes

The inscription made on any bus on the sideways can tell the car owner all the information you are interested in. Inability to read such labeling can lead to an error in choosing tires. And they, in turn, are directly related to the quality of driving on the car and safety of the driver and passengers.

1
All tires have general main parameters: width, height, diameter (p, h and c) and additional letters R and C, standing, respectively, before and after the diameter value:

  • P - Tire profile width, which has no load. Dimensional in inches or millimeters. The width of the tire and the wheel width of the wheel must coincide.
  • H is the percentage of tire profile height to its width. In the absence of this value, it is customary to be the ratio of more than 80%.
  • C is the landing diameter on the rim of the car wheel. Measured in inches.

2
If in the marking before the diameter value there is a letter R, then you are in front of you the tires of the radial design. The letter C, standing after the diameter value, means that the tire is designed for light trucks and small buses.

3
European labeling. VAZ-2106 tires have an inscription of the form 165/70R13. This inscription needs to be read as follows: Tire width 165 mm. The profile height is 55% of the tire width, that is, 90.75 mm. Radial type tire - R. Landing diameter of a tire of 16 inches, that is, 406.4 mm (1 inch is 25.4 mm).

4
American marking (occurs on tires for SUVs). Indeed, as a rule, in inches, and the semantic value of the numbers is not lost. In this case, the marking is 33 × 12.5r15, you should read: 33 inches (838.2 mm) - the tire diameter over the outer line, the width of the bus profile is 12.5 inches (317.5 mm), radial tire type, 15 inches (381 mm) - landing diameter of the tire.

5
English labeling (tires for tuning, on trucks with increased patency, on ATV tires). It is indicated by 25x8-12, measured in inches and in millimeters for domestic vehicles. The first digit is the diameter of the tire installed. Immediately after the cross - a figure denoting the width of the profile. The designation of the third digit is the landing diameter of the tire, which should coincide with the disk diameter. The combination of LT letters means that these are tires for light trucks and SUVs. Letter P - Tires for passenger cars. Sometimes there is a speed index in English label. This is the maximum movement speed for this tire. Apply it next to the main label, but at some distance from the size of the tire.

When choosing all-season tires, you will definitely consult with the store manager. Since some types of such tires are not suitable for use in harsh climatic conditions.
