Where to go in the Vyborg

In the north of the Finnish Gulf is the old town of Vyborg, whose history is notable for a repeated transition from Russia to Finland and vice versa. The architecture of the city is an amazing combination of the Epoch of the Middle Ages, the Swedish period, the Russian imperial period, Finnish modern and Soviet buildings.

1
Start acquaintance with Vyborg from visiting Vyborg Castle - the only Western European military facility in Russia. He is on the castle island. The initial look of the castle was not preserved, many buildings were destroyed for centuries, rebuilt, modified, some of them are irretrievably lost. The preserved elements of the complex are a mixture of different cultures and times.

2
On the stone bridge connecting the castle island and the mainland, go to the historic center of Vyborg - the old town, carrying the look of the Middle Ages with the old narrow streets, hurried courtyards and the lack of advertising. Here is the area of \u200b\u200bthe Old Town Hall with a monument to the founder of the city - Tortie Knutsson, the house of the Khakman and Co. trading company is located nearby. Or "Granite Palace" in the style of Finnish modern, Church of St. Hyacinte, House of City, Glinka House, Burgomister House, Verkuta merchant house and other famous buildings.

The hour tower is one of the main attractions of the city, the only surviving part of the destroyed Old Cathedral. It is noteworthy that the tower on a huge boulder without foundation was erected. Bell blows count the time to this day. At the top of the tower organized an observation deck. The tower is on a fortress street.

4
The market square, which is the north of the fortress street, is famous for two structures from different eras - a round tower and a Vyborg market. The round tower or "fat Catherine" was erected in the XVI century in the form of Tower-Barbakana as a defensive node. In 1922, the tower was reconstructed under a historic restaurant, now this is the most popular institution of the city. The Vyborg market was built at the beginning of the 20th century in the style of Finnish modern and is the central Vyborg market.

5
The acting Orthodox church in the style of classicism - the Savior Transfigurations of the Cathedral. It was erected at the Cathedral Square at the direction of Catherine II at the end of the XVII century.

6
Visit the alley of sculptures near the Hermitage-Vyborg complex on Vyborg Street. Here are copies of the works of Italian sculptors of the XVII-XVIII centuries. In the park of sculptures at the station Street, the works of Russian masters are established.

7
Montreo Park on the Bay of 2 kilometers from Vyborg Castle is a masterpiece of landscaped art, a skillful combination of untouched nature and architectural structures. This museum-reserve of 50 hectares is protected by the state.

Unfortunately, many buildings of the city do not have proper care and are in a deplorable state. A little saves the situation partial restoration by their Finnish enthusiasts, because the Vyborg is popular among Finnish tourists.

Not far from the round tower, on the Krasoarmeysky street there is a wonderful buckiest store: a cozy atmosphere, a huge number of books - a whole wall of fiction, books for children, classics, many domesticities and all at ridiculous prices, from 10 rubles! He left the store with two packages of books, and spent only 300 rubles, at a price of one book in a regular store. I advise everyone to look there!
