The most important element of any gasoline engine is the ignition coil. It is its health that largely determines the valid operation of the motor. The breakdown of this mechanism leads to the fact that the engine and stops starting at all.
Ignition coil - what is it?
Regardless of the ignition system - contact, contactless or electronic - the ignition coil is its main node. The coil performs the role of a certain energy storage device distributed in the following cylinders. This "miniature electrotransformer" converts low-voltage voltage, which comes from the battery and the generator, to high-voltage - for spark plugs.
The ignition coil is a fairly sensitive element. Even small deviations of the multimeter indicators can manifest itself in serious failures in the car.
Checking the ignition coil using a multimeter
The ignition coil is located in an ebony case. Relaxing contacts and disconnecting the wires, pay attention to the appearance of the coil housing. If at this stage, chips, cracks or other damage are detected, the diagnosis can be completed. The coil requires replacement.
If a visual assessment did not reveal damage, go to the removal of the coil. The ignition coil is placed in a rubber, so to check the correctness of its operation, the latch lock should be bent and remove the wires that are suitable for the wheelbar.
The initial stage of verification includes an assessment of the state of the primary winding.
- The measuring device is translated into an ohmmeter mode.
- Next set the smallest measurement limit.
- After that, connect the probe multimeter to the positive and negative contacts of the coil (external contacts).
- Assessing the indication of the multimeter, it is necessary to repel from the data specified in the technical documentation for this coil. The average values \u200b\u200bof the norm on which can be navigated, fluctuate in the gap 0.4 - 2.0 ohms.
- A smaller (or zero) value indicates a short circuit that occurred in the coil. Indications flowing into infinity indicate a break in the chain.
If at the initial stage of deviations were not detected, go to the second stage of verification - the survey of the secondary winding. Depending on the type of coil, the principle of connecting the probe will be somewhat different. So, if you are:
- A coil with a single output is fixing the probe multimeter to the positive contact of the coil and the output of the high voltage wire.
- The coil with two conclusions (each of which is high voltage) - the apparatus of the device is secure to these outputs.
- An individual coil - the multimeter terminals attach to the central contact and the output of the high voltage.
If this coil model has a lamellar core in the secondary winding, the normal indicators of the device will be 6 to 8 kΩ. For coils of other modifications, the resistance indicator can be within 15 com.
Reasons for the failure of the ignition coil
Fortunately, malfunction in the ignition coil, there are not so often. At the same time, some factors are still able to provoke a breakdown of this mechanism. These include:
- Overheating, increased voltage or strong vibration. As a result, insulation damage occurs, as a result, a short circuit in the coil braid.
- Overload caused by fault of spark plugs, damage to high-voltage wires. The consequence of such an impact is broken braid.
