How to choose a starter

An electromagnetic starter or contactor is an electrical apparatus designed for remote control of power loads, electric motors and protection of them from current overloads. It consists of a thermal protection relay, control buttons, alarm lamps. For the purpose, the degree of protection, the level of controlled current is distinguished by several types of starters. What factors do you need to pay attention to the selection of starters?

1
Decide on the selection of the manufacturer. Mainly in demand uses Kmi, PML, KTI. There are no significant differences between them, as all starters are interchangeable.

2
Select the rated current of the starter is the maximum current value that passes through the contacts of the starter. There are: 16a, 25a, 40a, 63a. There are devices and with more values, but they are extremely rare. The greater the value of the starter, the dimensions of him more.

3
The degree of protection of the electromagnetic starter depends on the conditions of its operation. When installing it on the shield, the degree of protection will be IP00, that is, zero. In industrial premises, an IP54 device is used, and for household conditions - IP40.

4
When choosing a working voltage of the coil, it is necessary to take into account the compliance of the voltage of the control circuits. 24 V, 110 V, 220 V, 380 V, DC 24 V are standard voltage values. For domestic needs, it is mainly chosen by a non-230V.

5
If the starter is installed inside the shield, you can select the device without a warning lamp and buttons. If necessary, they will be installed on the door. The electromagnetic starter installed outside the shield has a button built into the housing.

A thermal relay can be used for additional engine protection. But when installing the starter, you need to keep in mind that the additional device increases its overall dimensions.
